United Arab Emirates

After generations of British Rule, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was formed as an independent country in 1971. The Emirates are made up of seven hereditary enclaves that together enjoy vast oil wealth. However, the UAE remains a terror finance concern, given some of its lax laws and the “hawalas” that operate on its soil. Unlike much of the Middle East and North Africa, the country did not face major protests in recent years related to the Arab Spring. Behind Saudi Arabia, the UAE is the highest military spender among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations.

Alarm Grows in Washington as Saudi Coalition Attack on Yemen Port Appears Imminent
A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers urged Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Tuesday to reconsider his support for a seemingly imminent assault by a Saudi-led coalition on the crucial Yemeni port city of Hodeida. “In the face of Yemen’s senseless humanitarian tragedy, where 19 million people need emergency support, we are committed to using our Constitutional authority […]
US to Increase Support for Saudi-led Coalition in Yemen to Resist ‘Iran’s Mischief’
The United States is looking to increase support for the Saudi-led coalition battling Houthi rebels in Yemen with intelligence-sharing and logistical support but it will not send American troops to combat the Iranian-backed fighters, U.S. officials said Wednesday. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis during a visit to Saudi Arabia accused Iran of playing a destabilizing role […]
Trump Considers Military Push in Yemen War. US Lawmakers Push Back
Amid reports President Trump is considering more American military help for the Saudi-led fight in Yemen, U.S. lawmakers are urging caution, if not an about-face. Four U.S. senators have offered legislation to limit arms sales to Riyadh over its troubled Yemen campaign. Fifty-five members of the U.S. House called on Trump in a letter to end both U.S. […]
US Considers Supporting Saudi-led Coalition Plan to Capture Yemen Port
The Pentagon is considering throwing its weight behind an Arab military plan to capture a Red Sea port in Yemen as part of a move to step up its support for the Saudi-led coalition that has fought a two-year war against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. Senior officials said it was part of a new stance adopted […]
U.S. Boosts Military Backing for Saudi-Led Coalition in Yemen
The Trump administration has significantly increased military support for Sunni Arab states fighting al Qaeda and Iranian-backed militias in Yemen, said U.S. and Arab officials, drawing the U.S. deeper into the two-year civil war there. American support now includes greater intelligence and logistical support for the militaries of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, […]
UAE Says Houthi Attack on Ship in Shipping Lane was ‘Act of Terrorism’
The United Arab Emirates said on Wednesday Yemeni Houthi forces had attacked a UAE vessel in a strategic Red Sea shipping lane off the coast of Yemen at the weekend and called the incident an “act of terrorism.” Hundreds of Emirati soldiers in a Saudi-led coalition have been fighting Yemen’s Iran-allied Houthis, who control the […]
Yemen Counter-Terrorism Mission Shows UAE Military Ambition
The United Arab Emirates, one of Washington’s closest allies in the Middle East, is deploying its military against al Qaeda in Yemen, and in the process providing what some see as a badly-needed new template for counter-terrorism in Arab lands. UAE special forces are orchestrating the hunt for al Qaeda in remote deserts and mountains, […]
Gulf-Backed Yemeni Forces Seize City From al Qaeda: Military Source
Yemeni forces backed by Apache helicopters from a Saudi-led coalition wrested the city of Houta from al Qaeda fighters after a gun battle on Friday morning, a local military official said. Hours later, a car bomb detonated outside the foreign ministry in the southern Yemeni city of Aden, causing no casualties, another local official said. […]
UAE Mirage Fighter Jet Crashes Over Yemen
A United Arab Emirates fighter jet has crashed in the southern port city of Aden during a combat operation in the early morning hours of Monday, killing two pilots. A statement from the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen confirmed that the fighter jet was one of the French-made Dassault Mirage 2000-9s participating in the operations. The UAE operates […]
Saudi Arabia Recruits Sunni Allies in Row with Iran
Saudi Arabia rallied Sunni allies to its side in a growing diplomatic row with Iran on Monday, deepening a sectarian split across the Middle East following the kingdom’s execution of a prominent Shi’ite cleric. Bahrain and Sudan cut all ties with Iran, following Riyadh’s example the previous day. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told Reuters […]
