The sixth and final Baynunah-class corvette ordered by the United Arab Emirates Naval Force (UAENF) was launched in a ceremony held on 6 February, the Emirates news agency WAM reported. This follows the commissioning of the third Baynunah, Al-Dhafra (P 173), in December.
The first of the class was built at the CMN yard in Cherbourg, France, but the other five were constructed by Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding (ADSB). Work on the sixth vessel, Al-Hili (P 176), began in September 2009.
Armed with an Oto Malara 76 mm main gun, MBDA Exocet MM 40 Block III anti-ship missiles and Raytheon RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles, the 88 m vessels are designed to carry out a variety of roles.
