The U.S. is helping the Iraqi air force coordinate attacks on Islamist militants in the north of the country by providing surveillance intelligence and target coordinates, Iraq’s air force chief said Friday.

In an interview, Lt. General Anwar Amin said Iraqi forces and American advisers are coordinating in joint command centers in Baghdad and Erbil, the capital of the northern Kurdish region of Iraq now being threatened by the insurgent advance.

He said he expected the U.S. to increase its involvement by carrying out its own airstrikes, a move that began on Friday, if a threat to American personnel in Iraq develops, militants close in on Erbil, or to allow local forces to help a besieged religious minority trapped in mountains. […]
