Heavily armed army and security forces surrounded El Ziyadiya district of El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, on Monday.

Sources differ about the reason for the siege. According to a listener in El Fasher, the military action came against the backdrop of the refusal by a lieutenant of the paramilitary Border Guards to hand his vehicle that he was using to trade with. Others told Radio Dabanga that the Border Guards had entered El Ziyadiya district in order to release a detained comrade.
