Timeline:

  • July 31, 2015: ISIS storms a Libyan National Army (LNA) checkpoint outside the town of Ajdabiya, killing seven soldiers.
  • July 12, 2015: ISIS seizes the village of al-Wushka without a fight.
  • July 6, 2015: ISIS attacks the General National Congress (GNC) air base at Misrata, destroying four aircraft including a working MiG-25 fighter.
  • July 3, 2015: Three car bombs kill eight and wound 15 in Derna. ISIS later claims responsibility.
  • June 14, 2015: A coalition of jihadist groups known as the the Mujahideen Shura Council (MSC), seizes ISIS’s headquarters in Derna as the group loses dominance over the city.
  • June 12, 2015: Continued fighting in Derna between ISIS and Majlis al-Shura kills nine.
  • June 10, 2015: Clashes between ISIS and Majlis al-Shura kill 20 in Derna.
  • June 9, 2015: ISIS seizes the power plant west of Sirte which supplies central and western parts of the country with electricity. Three GNC soldiers were killed in the attack.
  • June 7, 2015: ISIS attacks the Fum Malgha checkpoint halfway between Tarhuna and Esbaieh, killing one guard and kidnapping several others.
  • June 7, 2015: ISIS attacks a checkpoint at the crossroads in Abu Ghrain, killing three GNC guards.
  • June 5, 2015: ISIS reportedly seizes town of Harawa, near Sirte.
  • June 3, 2015: ISIS kidnaps 86 Eritrean Christian refugees south of Tripoli.
  • June 1, 2015: Attack on GNC checkpoint in western town of Dafniya, kills five GNC soldiers.
  • May 29, 2015: ISIS seizes Sirte airport.
  • May 21, 2015: Suicide car bombing on checkpoint near Misrata, killing two GNC guards.
  • May 13, 2015: ISIS mortars kill four children in fighting between LNA and Islamists in Benghazi.
  • April 12, 2015: ISIS claims attacks on the Moroccan and South Korean embassies in Tripoli.
  • April 2015: Execution of dozens of Ethiopian Christians.
  • March 2015: GNC forces withdraw from Nofaliya, ISIS re-occupies the town.
  • March 19, 2015: Forces loyal to the GNC reportedly re-take Nofaliya.
  • March 4, 2015: ISIS reportedly seizes Al-Mabrouk and Bahi oil fields, attacks Al-Dhahra oil field further south.
  • February 20, 2015: Bombing kills at least 40 people in al-Qubbah.
  • February 9, 2015: ISIS claims to have seized Nofaliya.
  • February 2015: Militants from ISIS’s western Libyan province execute 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians.
  • February 2015: ISIS fighters seizes hospital, university, other key buildings in Sirte.
  • January 27, 2015: Attack on Corinthia Hotel in Tripoli, killing 10 civilians, including one American.
  • January 3, 2015: Attack kills 14 Libyan National Army soldiers on main road near southern city of Sabha.
  • November 2014: ISIS claims it sent nine suicide bombers to attack security forces in Benghazi.
  • October 2014: ISIS seizes control of most of Derna when Islamic Youth Shura Council swears allegiance to the “caliphate.”
