Sahel

As part of Operation Barkhane, the French have 3,000 troops deployed across the Sahel region. Their mission is assist the countries of Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Chad combat Islamist militant groups including al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Ansar Dine, and Al Mourabitoun. In addition to its troops, France has deployed six fighters, four drones, 20 helicopters, 200 armored vehicles, 200 logistics vehicles, and seven transport aircraft as of November 2014. Read more…

Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti

Attached to Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport the French and U.S. military maintain a joint military installation called Camp Lemonnier. From this base, France supports operations in the Horn of Africa and stations 1,900 troops, Mirage-2000 fighters, a number of transport and light attack helicopters, and a surgical hospital. UNIFIL

France is one of the largest contributors to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. About 900 French troops equipped with VBCI and LAV armored vehicles as well as Mistral short-range air defense systems are deployed to the peacekeeping mission. Read more…

Iraq

France has conducted dozens of airstrikes in Iraq since mid-September 2014. Over 1,600 stirkes have been carried out by coalition forces as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, or Operation Chammal as the French call it. Read more…

Jordan

In November, France deployed six Mirage 2000 fighters to an undisclosed air base in Jordan to conduct strikes against ISIS in Iraq. Read more…

Jean Bart

The air defense frigate Jean Bart is deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Combined Task Force 50. Its missions have included escorting the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier. Read more…

Al Dhafra, UAE

France maintains a permanent deployment at Al Dhafra air base in the United Arab Emirates. Currently nine Rafale fighters are stationed at the base are conducting strikes inside of Iraq against ISIS. Additionally, France currently has one Atlantique 2 reconnaissance aircraft, one C-135 aerial refueling aircraft, and possibly one E-3F airborne warning and control system (AWACS) at the base.

Charles de Gaulle

Reports indicate that the Charles de Gaulle, France’s sole aircraft carrier, and its battle group will deploy this spring to the Arabian Gulf to support airstrikes against ISIS. Read more…

Afghanistan

France’s last troops withdrew from Afghanistan at the end of 2014 after French troops ceased their combat operations in November 2012. 89 French troops were killed and as many as 700 injured during the 13 year war.
