Qatar is a tiny state of only 300,000 Qataris and 1,700,000 expatriates, but it is an energy juggernaut. Ruled by the Al Thani family, Qatar’s wealth has enabled the country to have outsized influence throughout the region. Home to the U.S. CENTCOM’s largest air base, Qatar has protection from its primary strategic concern: Iran. Since the Arab Spring, Qatar has actively tried to influence politics in Egypt, where it was publicly supportive of the Muslim Brotherhood-led government prior to Mohammed Morsi’s removal in July 2013. Qatar also provides financial support to Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood groups around the region, and various elements of the Syrian opposition, including some that display clear-cut extremist tendencies.
