North Korea

North Korea was founded in the wake of the Second World War when the victorious Allies divided the Japanese-occupied Korean peninsula into zones administered by the United States and Soviet Union respectively. Under Soviet sponsorship, the North formed the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in 1948 under the communist Korean Worker’s Party and its leader, Kim Il-sung. Following South Korea’s declaration of independence in 1950, the North invaded the South, hoping to reunify the peninsula under communist rule. After three years of heavy fighting – with U.S. and U.N. forces intervening on behalf of the South and Chinese forces for the North – the warring parties signed an armistice dividing the peninsula again along the 38th parallel. This contested border, known as the Demilitarize Zone (DMZ), has been the site of sporadic incidents for decades and remains heavily garrisoned on either side. Tensions on the peninsula have been compounded by the North’s development of nuclear weapons and its increasingly capable ballistic missile arsenal. Despite international scrutiny and crippling sanctions, the DPRK tested its first nuclear weapon in 2006. Following a military-first ideology known as songun, the impoverished nation continues to dedicate significant resources towards its military and remains a major proliferator of illicit arms to rogue states such as Iran and Syria.
