Algeria gained independence from France in 1962, after almost a century of occupation.  Algeria was the site of massive unrest in 1991 after the National Liberation Front (FLN), led a crackdown of the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) following the latter’s electoral success. Over the next six years, more than 100,000 people died in the resulting insurgency. In 1999, with the backing of the army, Abdelaziz Bouteflika was elected president. The following year, the FIS disbanded and, as of September 2013, Bouteflika remains president. His government has attempted to implement reforms in response to the ‘Arab Spring,’ yet it faces a number of problems, ranging from widespread unemployment to border disputes with Libya and Morocco, as well as threats from al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.
