Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud inaugurated the first phase of a border security barrier along the kingdom’s northern borders on 5 September.

The Saudi Press Agency reported that the multi-layered barrier runs along 900 km of the northern border and consists of 78 monitoring towers, eight command centres, 10 mobile surveillance vehicles, 32 rapid-response centres, and three rapid intervention squads, all linked by a fibre-optic communications network. It said 3,400 people were being trained to man the barrier by 60 trainers.

A promotional video was released to the media showing the 10 km-deep barrier consists of a sand berm, two fences, and a patrol road that connects the various watchtowers and supporting facilities. […]
