Qatar announced at the end of the DIMDEX 2014 defence exhibition in Doha that it had signed a QAR9.4 billion (USD2.58 billion) contract with Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) for the supply of main battle tanks (MBTs) and artillery systems.

The announcement created confusion as nearly a year earlier KMW had said it had been awarded a contract to supply 62 Leopard 2A7 MBTs and 24 PzH2000 artillery systems to Qatar for EUR1.89 billion (USD2.60 billion). However, a KMW spokesperson confirmed to IHS Jane’s that no further contracts have been signed to date for additional vehicles.

Cassidian Optronics, now a subsidiary of Airbus Defence and Space, announced in late March that it had been awarded a EUR40 million contract by KMW to supply vision equipment for the MBTs and artillery systems. […]
