Israeli navy commandos landed briefly in the Gaza Strip early on Sunday and thousands of Palestinians took refuge from bombardment in schools as Israel’s war with Hamas entered a second week with no sign of either side letting up.

The weekend saw a spike in casualties as Israel’s military attacked targets in Gaza from the air, the sea, and over its border fence. Gaza’s ministry of health said on Sunday that 167 people had been killed and 1,120 injured since the start of the operation on July 7.
