The Iraqi government has asked to buy 800 more Hellfire missiles from the U.S., according to a Pentagon spokeswoman.

The new order for laser-guided missiles covers the first of 5,000 Congress approved for sale in late August. The U.S. has already delivered 1,100 of the missiles to the Iraqi military to use against Islamic State extremists who have captured a swath of Iraq and Syria.

“We expect to begin delivery in November,” Navy Commander Elissa Smith, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said today in an e-mailed statement. The request ensures “continued support of their operational requirement and demonstrates Iraq’s ability to leverage” the U.S. foreign military sales process “as a means to build capacity,” she said.
