Preparations are under way to push Sunni insurgents out of the country’s second-largest city of Mosul as progress is made in quashing the offensive by Islamist militants, the Iraqi military said on Tuesday.

Major General Qassem Atta, spokesman for the Iraqi armed forces, said pro-government tribes in Mosul were preparing for an “uprising” to drive militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (known as Isis) out of the province.
