Two vessels from the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy’s (IRIN’s) 32nd flotilla have opened fire on a group of eight skiffs near the Gulf of Aden, Iran’s FARS news agency reported on 5 January, citing sources from the IRIN’s public relations department.
The suspected pirate skiffs were reported to have approached an Iranian product tanker about 120 km southeast of the city of Al-Mukalla in Yemen’s Hadhramaut region. The boats were said to have escaped after being fired upon.
The IRIN flotilla, comprising the Jamaran/Mowj-class frigate Jamaran (76) and the fleet supply ship Bushehr (422), has been undertaking counter-piracy patrols in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden since November 2014. […]
