Iran is in the process of developing new surface-to-surface weapon systems, Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan, the commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army (IRIA) Ground Force, announced on 27 April.
“A series of new missiles have been designed to be built by the Army’s Ground Force,” the English-language service of the Fars News Agency (FNA) quoted him as saying. “The laboratory production of these missiles has started and one or two samples have been test fired.”
He said the new weapons have a longer range than the Nazeat-10, which Fars described as a medium-range ballistic missile. The comparison to the Nazeat-10 – a 450 mm heavy rocket with a 125 to 140 km range – suggested Gen Pourdastan may have been referring to similar systems rather than guided missiles, as stated by the FNA translation.
