Khalifa Haftar’s position as the commander of the Libyan military has finally been confirmed by the internationally recognised parliament based in the eastern city of Tobruk.

Parliamentarians officially appointed Haftar as the commander of the country’s armed forces and gave him the rank of lieutenant general on 2 March.

Haftar served with the Libyan military until it was defeated by Chadian forces in the 1980s, after which he went into exile in the United States, but returned to support the rebellion that overthrew Muammar Ghadaffi in 2011. […]
