A test of Israel’s Arrow 3 exoatmospheric ballistic missile interception system apparently ended in failure for unspecified reasons on 16 December.

During the trial a target was launched from over the Mediterranean Sea to represent an incoming ballistic missile. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) did not identify the type of target involved, only saying it was made by the Israeli company Rafael.

Israeli defence officials said the target flew its intended course and was successfully detected and tracked by the Arrow 3 system. However, the MoD said an Arrow 3 interceptor missile was not launched as planned because “the conditions for firing an interceptor were not ripe.” Officials would not go into details about what those conditions were.
